S. P. Balasubramaniam, or SPB as he is popularly known, is a prominent Indian film playback singer who has been delighting listeners with his energetic and versatile singing style for nearly half a century. He began his career singing Telugu songs and eventually started singing in several Indian languages. SPB is also an accomplished actor, film and music director, and dubbing artist. He has won several state and national awards, including the Padmashree and Padmabhushan, as well as film awards for Best Male Playback Singer. A few universities have even endowed him with doctorates. He also won the Guinness World Record for recording the highest number of songs.
Having grown up listening to his songs on the radio, I was delighted to learn he would be performing in Fort Wayne. It is difficult to list my favorite songs, but I definitely love “Enneno Andalu/Povoma Oorgolam” from Chinna Tambi/Chanti, “Etheega puvulo/Tere mere beechme” from Maro Charithra/Ek Duje Ke Liye, Kannada film song set to a folk tune-“Thera Eri Ambaradage” from Bhoothayana Maga Ayyu, “Didi Tera Devar Deewana”, and melodious Kannada film songs “Nammoora Mandara Hoove” and “Jeeva Veene”. His voice is very emotive and full of energy. Don’t miss the opportunity to attend his concert ‘Swarabhishekam’, a program by ETV, and enjoy his singing!
